Product Overview

by Fr. Joshua Makoul

In our broken world, many Christians find their spiritual progress hindered or stalled by psychological wounds from their past. But these wounds can be healed with the proper treatment. Priest and licensed therapist Joshua Makoul shows how we can draw on the insights and resources of both the Church and modern psychology to help us come to terms with the past and use it to further our path to union with God.

About the Author: Fr. Joshua Makoul has been serving as the dean of St. George Cathedral in Pittsburgh since 2012. Before that time, he worked in the counseling field for sixteen years. This involved work in family-based, school-based, and outpatient settings. Fr. Joshua received two years of training in family therapy at the Philadelphia Child Guidance Center and completed a one-year certificate course in cognitive behavior therapy at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Fr. Joshua received his master’s degree in counseling psychology from Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia and his bachelor’s in psychology from Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He is licensed in the state of Pennsylvania for counseling. For seminary he attended Holy Cross Seminary in Boston and received an M.Div.

    Very useful but terse

The greatest strength of this book is also its greatest weakness: it doesn't contain many examples and those that are featured are presented in a rather general fashion. You won't find the fictionalized stories of composite real people that are so common in the self-help genre in this book. It is also pretty concise. As an academic (with no expertise in the field), I really appreciate this approach. You're not forced to identify with stereotypes, you are not distracted by drama and you are not wasting your time reading an inflated hand-out of a seminar or speech. All good. There is substance. However, as a sufferer, I felt left in the dark on a number of occasions, especially due to the frequent use of demonstratives that didn't seem to refer to something obvious, at least in my mind. After a couple of times reading 'this healing', I was bugged by the question 'what healing?', and more specifically, 'how healing'. The answers are there (nothing a merciless editor couldn't have fixed), but I was scrambling at times. In addition, I had a bit of a hard time to see the relationship between the chapters.
